KYLE ROTHSCHILD
I started piping at age 8 after falling in love with the instrument. My first teacher was Bill Merriman, and then I had lessons from Ken Sutherland, all while playing in the Prince Charles Pipe Band working my way from grade 4 to grade 2, including getting fourth in 3A at the worlds in 2005, and pipe Sargent of the 3A band from 2006-2008. After moving from the Bay Area To Scotland and then Northern Ireland, I played in the Vale of Atholl and Cullybackey Grade 1 bands, before moving to the St. Laurence O'Toole Pipe Band for the 2016 season where I currently play. I also compete in solos, when I can!
My inspirations in the piping world are varied. Growing up, I loved the Vale of Atholl, SFU, and SLOT medleys, but I also was lucky enough to watch the Dan Reid Memorial Competition in San Francisco and had the chance to watch some of the top solo pipers play up close. Musically, I always loved the music from Terry Tully, Jack Lee, Gordon Duncan, Mark Saul, and many more, but I also get inspiration from Jazz, Classical, Pop, and Rock music. This is led me to start composing at age 15!
I have two books available at the moment: Tunes from the Flight Deck and Tunes from the Golden Gate. I have been lucky enough to have three of my tunes played by grade 1 bands in the past. All from my first book!
